Jojoba for a Healthy Scalp
In the last article I discussed how sebum may be a cause of baldness. In this article I will look at one way of helping combat excess sebum build up, remember the goal here is not to eliminate sebum but to keep it at healthy levels and Jojoba might be just the thing to do that. Jojoba is a natural oil derived from a shrub which grows in areas like California and Arizona. The oil is unique because it is the only naturally occuring oil that is not triglyceride. A triglycewhat? Don’t worry about what that means, what is important is because of this it has very similar properties to sebum. What’s more is it actually mixes readily with sebum which forms a substance that “provides exceptional transepidermal respiration and moisture control”. Jojoba is very easily absorbed into the skin through pores and hair follicles and because of this “the pores and hair follicles can remain open and thus maintain their proper functionality.” When the jojaba oil is absorbed it losens and and dissolves hardened sebum and therefore give room for the hair to grow and also for the follicle to become healthy again. Unlike sebum, jojoba doesn’t clog and harden.
Not only this but it will leave your scalp soft and well conditioned so this might help with dry flakey and itchy scalps. You can buy it over the counter in any good health shop, look for 100% oil, and if possible make sure that is “cold pressed”. And there’s more…Jojoba usually increases the shineyness of the hair too. It’s best applied after a hot bath or shower as the pores will be open. Just massage it into your scalp with your fingertips. I’m not exactly how many times a week I would use Jojoba, I would suggest at least once, perhaps two or three times…experiment and see what works best for you.

Hi, I’ve been having major problems with my hair. I am a 31 year old black female. I get my hair permed (straightend) once every two months and for the past 6 months I’ve been loosing my hair all around my temples, and even in the front on the very top of my head. I have tried everything. I went to my dermatologist and she suggested Rogaine, which did absolutely nothing but dry my hair out. My hair is ok for the 1st 3-4 days after I wash it but after the 5th day, I get an oily secretion from my scalp and it comes w/ a light odor and my hair starts to come out from the ROOT. I can lightly drag my fingers through my hair and come out with 5,6,7 strands of hair. I’ve told all the hairdressers I’ve gone to “its not breakage, my hair is not breaking, its coming out from the root,” but they don’t know anything either. I’ve stood on my head for 2 weeks thinking there isn’t enough blood flow to the top and front of my head but that made no difference either. Since I am black, I’m only suppose to wash my hair 1 time a week which is fine but I can’t stop this hair loss!!!! I started using Nioxin Bionutrient for Treated Hair but that still only last for 4-5 days and then my scalp gets oily and the hair starts coming out again. It is very noticeable where my hair is missing and I just don’t know what to do anymore. OH!! I also tried the Jojoba oil for 1 month and that worked (a little) but then my hair would start coming out again after day 5 . PLEASE HELP
