I saw someone asked about bumble and bumble. That’s what led me to this site. I started using it based on it’s reputation for being a high end product but have noticed considerable hair loss with it. For all the moms out there, I’d equate my hair loss to post pregnancy proportions! My mom had the same issue with the volumizing line, but I adjust attributed it to her sensitive skin. Guess I was wrong. I have only been using it for 3 months when I finally put it all together. The loss started a couple weeks ago. Thanks for the info!

Ive have used SLS free shampoo for the first time (seba med) for a month now. My hair shedding is actually never been worse, loose a lot of hair, but I have thick and heavy mane too. Anyway it sure makes your hair feel more natural, harsh shampoos takes all the life and style out of the hair..

I would try using Dr. Bronners Peppermint or Lavender bar soaps to wash your hair with. That is what I have been using because its all organic and whole ingredients. Also peppermint is a anti-androgen, dht inhibitor, and 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor so it will be beneficial for people who are balding. Check my video out I made about this. I also have many videos on hair loss. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bwg-gcuPLsc&feature=channel_video_title

Ive been working on the maxim if not using harsh chemicals SLS etc then it cannot do you any harm.
Tried Alpecin and hair seemed to go lighter and more straw like…..chemicals at work.
            Regine itchy. Nizorale itchy.
All these strike me as chemical loaded and react accordingly.
So i have gone with Rainforest shampoos. Tried all. No irritation at all….no shedding and possibly some regrowth. Hair goes a bit greasy for a week or so because you are not stripping the oils out but settles down on week 2.
No a guy at the sports club who only used baby soap when washing his hair (actual bar of soap) Never suffered any hair loss and now 47 Could be he lacks th dodgy genes….could be the bar of soap.

Over a year ago, I cut back to washing my hair only once or twice a week. At the time my hair was shedding so much that I would not wear dark colors as my hair is blonde and all the hairs would show up. After I cut way back on the washing the hair fall out was less but still there.
Last week I decided to get rid of all chemicals in everything I possibly could. I found Kiss My Face Olive Oil (no fragrance) soap. Got a huge bar and started using it for toothpaste (just rub my toothbrush on the bar), hair (spray hair with vinegar when you’re done) and of course hand and body.
Hair – Roots less oily, no hair loss noticed, hair just looks better, no itchy scalp.
Teeth – No noticeable improvements but I feel better about using this soap which does not taste soapy at all. Doesn’t taste great either but…
              Body – less itchy
By the way, I found this website because I was so surprised that my hair stopped falling out and wanted to find out if it was because I got rid of the shampoo and I am sure from my experience that is it. No clinical study necessary.
This soap is just olive oil, water and sodium hydroxide (lye)
I have tried Ivory before this and the hair was good but it is terrible as a toothpaste (very soapy taste).
If you are trying to get away from ALL harsh chemicals you should give soap a try but do check the ingredients. Some shampoo bars are actually made with SLS as the first ingredient.

                Hi,
I’m a 58-year-old woman who is growing her hair for the first time.
All my adult life my hair has been prone to falling out. Then, when I ran my fingers over my scalp, I could feel new hairs growing like bristles. This indicated the hair was breaking off inside the root. The hair on the back of my head rarely grew beyond 2 inches before shedding. The rest of my hair was prone to be frizzy. So I always had short hair.
Six months ago I started not washing it apart from with water, and used no other hair products. At first, it was greasy and I solved this by frequent brushing with a bristle brush for fine hair. It’s naturally dry though, so it wasn’t too much of a problem.
Now the greasiness has gone. I’m still brushing my hair and thoroughly rinsing it with water to clean it. It’s thick, of even length and smooth.
Look at film footage of teenagers in the 60s with thick bouncy hair, and wonder: ‘What happened?’
To say I’m annoyed about this is an extreme understatement.

I’m 22 and already starting to lose hair. I statred useing just water to clean my hair about a week ago and haven’t noticed any real change in the amount of grease and my hair already feels cleaner than with shampoo, but i’m worried that not useing shampoo may not be enough to help me regain lost hair. Men in my family tend to lose some hair and one of my brothers lost alot, but 22 is way to quick. I’ll probably end up loseing more no matter what I do, but if the lose is from shampoo I’d like to keep as much hair as I can till that day comes. So if there is anyone who knows of any ways I can regrow lost hair I would greatly appreciate it. If anyone knows anything please email me at haircare69@live.com.

I’m wondering if anyone has gone to the press about the danger of SLS in shampoo. It’s interesting that the hair products that are advertised are usually conditioners, serums etc, supposed to repair the hair. I wonder if the manufacturers of SLS shampoo know what it does, and rely on this to sell all those other products? I do like a good conspiracy theory! When I was in my 20s, I was told by a trichologist that my hair had gone into ‘premature menopause’, yet I didn’t have the menopause. Actual menopausal women don’t seem to question why their hair thins. Could it be that what actually happens, is that it gets drier, so it’s more vulnerable at that time? Mine was vulnerable when I was young, and I thought, when I reach the menopause it will be even worse! But now that I’ve reached it, my hair is thick. I also brush it a lot and massage my scalp. But when I was using shampoo it was too weak to brush – brushing would pull it out. But for thousands of years, people used to brush their hair.

                      Thanks everyone for your postings.
I am a 31 year old female and my hair started falling out over ten years ago. I’ve been to doctors, naturopaths, acupuncturists and no one has had any idea why my hair falls out. I’ve done lots of internet research too and this is the first time that SLS has come up. My scalp is super itchy, too.
I can’t wait to start experimenting with Dr Bronners, baking soda, apple cider vinegar and SLS free shampoos. I have decreased the amount of days I wash my hair from every day down to twice a week. I have noticed that washing it less is correlating with less falling out. Now I am hoping that less frequent washing, plus the acv will make everything better. I’ll let you know…

Hi there, I found this article very helpful and have recently discontinued the use of Shampoo and conditioner.

The reason being that I have a bald patch about 2cm wide by 1.5cm long, which has really freaked me out , being a female and all! I have concluded that this must be due to shampoo use and have never had a problem with this prior to the last month and an half when i started shedding more hair than usual, although i did not notice the patch untill 2 days ago when an obliging friend pointed it out.

The product I had been using over this month and a half period was Sunsilk co creations straight perfection. The increased hair loss and now baldness have coinsided with my purchase and use of this product. not to mention facial, neck and back rashes. I am curios to find out if this product is containing High dangerous quantities of this chemical in concern.

I’m not really sure where to look for more information or how to go about it, I am really hoping my hair grows back mor then anything!!!

I have stopped using SLS for a year, whenever i massage my scalp hair would fall out all over the place (i have a big head of hair but still)…. no it doesn’t, so there is truth in this. The problem is that SLS free nature cosmetic doesn’t cleanse very well…so the hard-water problem becomes the new enemy to the hair, also it requires a lot of damagaing friction on wet hair to get it to cleanse. Sometimes i use 100% natural bar soap too, it dries out the hair but it’s at least not toxic or harmful.

WOW i am loving all these comments. I feel like a complete berk but i have struggled with my hair getting thinner and more damaged over the years & spent loads of $$$ on product to “help.”

So the other day i found this site and it resonated – the whole theory of SLS (and other crap, i am sure) stripping the scalp of natural oils, the scalp not functioning properly etc – it all made total sense.

i posted about it on my (astrology) site here http://mysticmedusa.com/2012/06/haute-hippy-on-the-dark-moon/ and the comments there re this are interesting too. Some people think it is, like, heretical to question shampoo or the rightness of companies such as Redken lol.

Anyway, it has been a five days now and my hair does feel a bit lank – i am used to getting a treatment and a blowdry a LOT – but it also feels like there is more of it already and that it’s growing, more body.

Trying the Baking Soda/ACV tomorrow but i think i’m a believer! Oh and related…i also stopped using body lotions and face moisturizers (going totes hippy here) and my skin has a GLOW now like you would not believe. All i have put on it is hemp oil…Hmm

I am a licensed cosmetologist, who has used a lot of products.. And here are some of my thoughts. I have no scientific proof but will give you my opinions.. and these are just opinions..

OK.. I have a brother who is 3 years older, and completely bald.. I started using Nioxin shampoo, conditioner and treament, when I was about 24.. am 39 now.. I have most of my hair.. my brother does not..

Nioxin is meant to keep the hair YOUR HAVE from falling out.. and DOES NOT re-grow hair that is gone… I get mine at cost because I have my license so it can get pricey.. but again. my brother is bald… I am not…

THE TRICK to NIOXIN.. and most people will never tell you this.. is to gently brush your head with a decent BOARS HEAD BRUSH!! for about a minute or 2. then get in the shower … put the shampoo on .. lather . but dont scrub it in.. just let it sit there for about two minutes…

If you are looking for a natural version of Nioxin… Aubrey has a SIMILAR SYSTEM with a shampoo called MEN’s STOCK Biotin shampoo for thinnning hair called Ginsend Biotine.. and conditioner. and then a leave in tonic…

I get mine at vitacost.com.. really cheap there…

I use my nioxin for 3 months.. (get the large sizes..) then switch to Aubrey for 3 momnths.. and so on..

your hair and skin. will get used to whatever you are using.. and will stop working . just like doing the same workout over and over.. you need to switch your skin care and hair care…. also blow dry on low setting…

I do over course have some recession. but just went to Newlookmd.com in ca for hair transplants around the hairline.. and only took about 4 hours.. for me it was about 4200 for 1700 graphts.. and I will need one more session. so the hair will look as dense as the other.. but it is my own hair… you cant even see the scar in the back.. and the hair will be there permanently.. pretty amazing huh???

so check out Nioxin.. Aubrey Men’s Stock.. and there is another… oh what is the name.. it is another natural product.. let me look.. CURETAGE. by dr whitaker.. i have never used this one. but it is a five piece system. sounds like a lot..

just remember.. most hairloss is genetic. i know people who wash their hair a lot and are men in their 50’s who have more hair than i did at 18..

                                  i hope this helps…

if you order nioxin.. you can usually get in cheaper online..

and get that boars head brush.. just make sure you get a good quality italian one… they usually are the best….

For 2 1/2 months now, myself, my husband, and my two daughters who all have experienced hair loss have switched to Burt’s Bee’s (NO SLS) extra volume pomegranite and soy shampoo and conditioner, – and we are ALL experiencing new baby hairs – scalp feels cleaner, hair seems thicker – even the girl who cuts my hair looked puzzled when she combed my hair prior to my hair cut a week ago- I didn’t tell her I was doing something different but wanted to see if she noticed – I am now going to see what other products we use that have SLS in them – I feel it should be banned from use – what’s the purpose of the FDA again?????”

                                      Anyone have experience with this?

I bought the new Burt’s Bees Very Volumizing Shampoo, Pomegranate but have never used the old formula. So, I would not be able tell otherwise.

I had used some shampoo that had sadly lead to me losing about and inch of hair. If I simply just stop using that shampoo will it grow back, because I am still a young age.

I was listening to a radio show about three months ago that dealt with hair loss. During the course of this show, one person called in to suggest not washing your hair more than one time a week, two at the most and that is what he is doing and now has a full head of hair. The show’s hosts disregarded him and went on to the next caller, but I decided to look more into this since I had been thinning for about ten years. I found this article and decided that I really had nothing to lose except more hair and that was already happening. I bought some shampoo at Trader Joes that listed only organic ingredients and only washed my hair a couple of times a week. I also switched soaps to a SLS free soap. I figured if anything, I would be spending a lot less on shampoo.
My wife was a hair dresser, so she has always bought the expensive shampoos in the salons. Reading about SLS reminded me of a story that she has told since beauty school about a woman who spilled a bottle of suave in her bathtub and the next day when she washed the shampoo down the drain, it had eaten through the dirt on the tub, leaving it shinny clean. This now makes sense.
At first I did notice that I stopped losing so much hair, sometimes not seeing any in the sink in the morning or on my hands after shampooing. After about three months, the one thing that I did see was that the hair on my legs that was always broken off from the pants that I have to wear to work had grown back. I then started to look through my hair and had noticed some new hairs growing back.
While this hasn’t translated into a full head of hair, it is exciting because up until now, there was no new growth at all. I feel that I may be a little premature in writing this for I want to wait another three months and see where I am then, but I have noticed some people waiting for instant results. I figure that if this works, it will take time because it took a while for it to thin to the point where it is now and I just hope that I didn’t do permanent damage using shampoo with SLS’s.

I love Burts for cleansing, but it’s not the best for making my hair feel fuller or thicker. Here is a great shampoo that helps with those things that I use and it is sulfate free! It’s called Regenepure http://www.regenepure.com

Has anyone else used it yet? I really have been enjoying it.

                                              G’Day! Hairlossbuddy,
Along the same lines, I know which sulfates tend to be harsh found on the scalp plus cause hair loss. So does which mean using an natural shampoo usually assist hair reduction? Which shampoos don’t cause as much hair reduction as regular shampoos do? Suggestions?
I’ll be back to read more next time

Hey really interesting article and coments.I too heard about sulfates from my friend 3 years ago ,but i wasnt willing to try and give time to sulfate free shampoos untill now.The reason behind it was that last year i bleached my hair and it since then it had been dry and frizzy!I did some research and bought organic shampoo a month ago.At first i thought it didnt lather well and my hair wouldnt be clean afterwards. My second concern was the matching conditioner. It didnt seem to detangle and after leaving the shower i feared that my hair would be full of knots!Well i couldnt be more wrong! After some washes i noticed that my hair was improving to to point that it seems that the damaged is almost undone, as someone else said before.Though my hair when wet feels almost dry, after i let it air dry it so shiny ,frizz-free and feels so much stronger!I am now in love with my hair, people have commented about how beautiful it looks. Also it seems to be growing much faster and it s only been a month. The band i m using is called L occintane and i have tried samples of all their shampoos and their amazing.I d say to anyone who has concerns about sulfates to give it a try and buy a sulfate-free shampoo once.Give it time though:At first they seem drying but really it s quite the opposite!I have come to think that all the other shampoos that give you that softening effect when in the shower actually dry out hair in the long run!I also think that we have to use conditioner because of the sulfates, but i m not sure yet,i need more time. All in all i m so happy i tried sulfate free shampoos and i dont plan to go back to my old shampoos any time soon!

Wow! This site has actually changed my whole life and thanks to everyone who has posted.
I wrote in April, after this site convinced me to make the switch from an SLS based shampoo to a non-SLS one
                                                  Experiment;
I use bar soap- fragrance free, Kiss My Face olive oil soap. I used apple cider vinegar, lots at first, but now rarely.
I washed my hair every 5-6 days.

Results: Almost no hair loss at all! I used to shed constantly in the shower and all day long. Now, I pick a few hairs out of my comb and that’s it.
Itchy scalp- it took 6 months for my scalp to stop itching, but finally it did. Then I went to my salon and told my hairdresser about my experiment. She assured me that the shampoos she used were SLS free and used them on my hair. Sadly, I went right back to itchy scalp. Next time I see her, I will bring Dr. Bronners.

While I can’t say scientifically that my results can be extrapolated to everyone, I have found what works for me. The bar soap I use rarely needs acv to rinse out any residue. I have many little hairs growing in all over my head. This is the most exciting part for me. I knew that when I finally solved my hair loss problem, I would see these little hairs and now they are here!

I recommend that you ditch the SLS shampoo if you are experiencing hair loss.
                                                  Lizzy

I posted here about a year ago and wanted to add a few things.

I had always told my daughter for years to only wash her hair once or twice a week. When she turned 12 she was obsessed with all these fragrant products and used her money or gift cards she got to buy scrubs and lotions and shampoos and body washes. She started washing her hair every day and guess what? A ton of hair loss. It was clogging the drain, all over the floor, in her food, all over the bathroom counter and her brush was full of it every day.
At some point I reminded her of this website and my experience with too much hair washing and suggested she goes as long as possible between hair washing. She started washing her hair once a week and guess what. End of hair loss.

To people who use those shampoos every day and don’t have a problem – that’s great but just because you’re not allergic to peanuts doesn’t mean they won’t close up the throat of someone who is allergic. Everyone is different.

I read this article over a year ago, and stopped washing my hair that day. My hair loss has stopped dead in it’s tracks, and my hair looks healthy and full. I survived all winter with no dandruff, which I usually have very badly during cold months. My hair loss before going no shampoo was constant, and in my twenties I found myself explaining all the time that my dad was completely bald and that I have that to look forward to. I’m now nearly 33 years old and I feel like my hair looks great compared to my dad at this same age. It may not have rolled back the years, but it stopped the hair loss.

I commented before on how cutting back to washing your hair only once a week stops hair loss. I don’t think I ever mentioned the growing back of the hair. One day, about 3 months after my daughter had cut back to once a week washing, she was sitting by the window and I could see the new growth in the sunlight. There was a “halo” of new hair about two inches long all over her head. Now the new hair has grown out to a length where it lays down instead of sticking up. Her hair is probably twice as thick as it was when she washed her hair every day.
I recently switched to Dr Bronners peppermint as a shampoo (still only once a week) and I just want to warn anyone who uses this – if you have hard water like I do it will turn your hair into an uncombable mess. I don’t use conditioner on my hair, but I do pour straight vinegar ( I keep it in a little squeeze bottle) over my head, making sure it gets all over my hair and scalp. If you do this it will instantly solve the problem. Tilt your head back while pouring it on to keep it out of your eyes. I just leave the vinegar on my hair and scalp for about 30 seconds and then comb thru my hair as I rinse it. When my hair is dry I put some oil in my hand – argan, grapeseed, or sunflower – and rub my hands together. I run my fingers thru all but the roots of my hair and repeat until all my hair is very lightly coated. It will soak in and I usually have to reapply in the next day or two. My hair is long, wavy, fine textured, thick and naturally blonde if this matters to anyone.
I am actually going to start trying to gradually stretch my washings to once every two weeks.

SLS full form is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. SLS is a cleansing product which is used in shampoos or in floor cleansers. It only cleans the surface of anything that will touched by it. It is very harsh for hairs and eyes too. Why companies put it in the shampoos if they know it is a harsh products. A common answer is it is cheap and create bubbles easily. So always use shampoo which have no SLS(Sodium Lauryl Sulfate).

Hair loss runs in my family. I’m 26 years old and I started to lose my hair right after high school. My hairline started to recede and was becoming thin around the temple area. I’ve been using the Shielo Volume Shampoo now for 4-5 months now and I love it!
Once I started using this shampoo with the conditioner as well, I’ve noticed a HUGE difference! My hair stopped falling out. My hair grows faster and its thicker….Don’t expect this to grow hair where you lost it. It’s not going to happen. But to stop and prevent hair from falling out, this is the stuff for you

I tried doing the no shampoo thing two years ago. I started with the baking soda and vinegar to clean, then after that stopped working I went water only. That failed so, so badly, even though I kept up with it for months! Then I went to vinegar washing, then soapnuts, then dirt (my father said he used to wash his hair with dirt, thought I’d try it), then I made my own shampoo bars, and now I just use a semi-natural SLS/paraben/phthalate free shampoo from Just Bee Natural. Works so much better, smells better, and cleans my hair well. Sure beats having greasy hair for two years! Take care 🙂
